ferraby lionheart @ the echo 10.05.10
an evening spent at the echo was all worth it as i listened to 4 amazing singers... ferraby lionheart was one of them. from los angeles to nashville and back to la, the music seems to reflect lionheart's real life travels as he dabbles in folk and indie rock without really seeming to fit into either category. maybe this is the secret to making a more enjoyable album. he's touring in support of his second full-length, the jack of hearts, which he composed in nashville. songs like "pocketknife" present lionheart's folky twang and lyrical sincerity with the utmost accessibility, which is also found on songs like "my name" and "arkansas" that slow down the approach and unfold with more precision, albeit with less forthright infectiousness.

basia bulat @ the echo 10.05.10
ps a night spent at the echo was spectacular.. basia bulat was one of the amazing folk singers that i had the pleasure of seeing this evening. touring and promoting her new album, heart of my own, opened for first aid kit. what a sweet, grateful girl singing on the stage with her variety of strings. one of my favorites being the autoharp. best stated by pitchfork's, amy granzin..."her alto's the aural equivalent of the perfect party host who makes every guest not only welcome, but certain they're the most important person in the room" i found to be very true. surprise.... on stage basia sang a polish song, ‘to nie ptak’, loosely translated, “it’s not a bird.”
one of her songs in polish after mentioning her proud polish heritage. as i listened to her songs I find her musically faithful to the rustic sentiments. her songs grow and reveal their treasures slowly. they are golden! thank you basia........

fences @ the silverlake lounge 10.04.10
ps i went to see the head and the heart and discovered fences on this very evening. the band consists of
CHRISTOPHER MANSFIELD//VOX,GUITARS

indeed mansfield is a story teller through his music with lyrics such as “i'm fucking up, i’m fucking up, i’m fucking up everything” from the song girls with accents, or boys around here lyrics like “i’ll be alright if I can just stay in tonight. i don’t want to talk. just let me drink, tomorrow we’ll give up.”
forever bummed... is a description on their myspace page. how can one not love that description? personally i think sad tragic music is most beautiful! watching christopher's stage manerisms, looking at his image, listening to his voice and lyrics combines a story that you hate to hear, but need to know... where does this pain come from? my assumption is... life!
spin magazine said, "fences mastermind, chris mansfield, looks like he could be a roadie for new jersey hardcore band thursday, but don't be fooled. it's his acoustic guitar and quiet stories of emotional torment that shine..." i agree with this completely.

the head and the heart @ the silverlake lounge and bardot 10.4.10
ps music has become my religion, and the head and the heart are part of it. i have been playing them on blip.fm (http://blip.fm/CreepingElm) for the last month and was excited when i saw they were playing in la.
the head and the heart are a folk-rock band hailing from seattle, washington. i had the pleasure of seeing them twice in the same evening, first at the packed silverlake lounge and then at bardot in hollywood. they played songs from their eponymous debut lp, 3 of their finest being "down in the valley," "lost in my mind," and "sounds like hallelujah." everyone had a grand time dancing and singing along. it's a show that you can't just stand in one place and listen to, as their music makes you celebrate and move.
i walk through the canyons everyday and singing "down in the valley," whose words are better than mine to describe this band to watch-
