the decemberists @ the wiltern 2.12.11
ps the decemberists are a folk rock band made up of colin meloy, chris funk, jenny conlee, nate query, and john moen. on board for their tour is nickel creek's sara watkins (described by meloy as a sixth decemberists), providing fiddle lines and support on guitar and drums.
they opened their show with a tribute to la, "los angeles i'm yours", from their album her majesty at the wiltern theater on 2.12.11. thank you colin for greeting all of us that were seated at the top of the mezzanine. i loved that he asked the audience to make noises as if we were being swallowed by a whale preparing us for participation during "the mariner's revenge song", an over-the-top sea tale from 2005's picaresque.
the concert ended with "june hymn" from the king is dead, their most recent album released on 1.17.11
a big thank you for a lovely show that i will remember for a lifetime! and colin your quirkiness is adorable. btw, la will be waiting for your return, even if you have to swim under water to sing to us.
ps ps if you haven't seen them live get out there and find tickets!

fleet foxes - helplessness blues
ps self-titled debut with helplessness blues, due out on may 3rd
ps ps i don't know who to believe. i'll get back to you someday, soon you will see.... i'm tongue tied and dizzy
i was raised up believing
i was somehow unique
like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes
unique in each way you can see
and now after some thinking
i'd say I'd rather be
a functioning cog in some great machinery
serving something beyond me
but I don't, I don't know what that will be
i'll get back to you someday soon you will see
what's my name, what's my station
oh just tell me what I should do
i don't need to be kind to the armies of night
that would do such injustice to you
or bow down and be grateful
and say "Sure take all that you see"
to the men who move only in dimly-lit halls
and determine my future for me
and I don't, I don't know who to believe
i'll get back to you someday soon you will see
if I know only one thing
it's that every thing that I see
of the world outside is so inconceivable
often I barely can speak
yeah I'm tongue tied and dizzy
and I can't keep it to myself
what good is it to sing helplessness blues?
why should I wait for anyone else?
and I know, I know you will keep me on the shelf
i'll come back to you someday soon myself
if I had an orchard
i'd work till I'm raw
if i had an orchard
i'd work till I'm sore
and you would wait tables
and soon run the store
gold hair in the sunlight
my light in the dawn
if I had an orchard
i'd work till I'm sore
if I had an orchard
i'd work till I'm sore
someday I'll be
like the man on the screen

cory chisel @ the satellite 1.23.11
ps spaceland is now the satellite. this was my first time back since the name change. cory chisel and adriel harris are the names that brought me back in. i was introduced to their music from a past friend on blip.fm. then i saw them live at the troubadour open for joshua james and continued to follow their music. his debut EP was recorded with his band the wandering sons, cabin ghosts. some of the best shows seen are at this small music venue. with this said cory chisel has now been included in my best shows seen at the satellite. it was quite an amazing feeling standing in a room of approx. 60 people listening to cory and adriel sing. chisel's soulful voice combined with pleasant acoustic guitars and keyboard by adriel is nothing short of captivating as they deliver heartfelt folk tunes. some of my clicks captured him immersed in spiritedness.. almost ghost-like. i am quite surprised how few people know about cory chisel when i talk music with them. thank you for a great show!
ps ps cory had a friend from venice, ca join them on stage playing electric guitar.

chief @ bootleg theater 01.17.11
ps i first discovered chief last year reading a random blog and immediately played their music on blipfm. then more recently i noticed a twitter post that they were opening for grouplove at the bootleg theater. it was a must that i go. as this being my first time attending a show at bootleg theater i wasn't sure what to expect. i'm super happy to have ventured out because I got to see a great band as well as finding a new venue to capture more music memories. chief is a ca band made up of evan koga, mike moonves, danny and michael Fujikawa playing a melancholic folk-rock style. their sound is one built on the emotional foundations of heartache, longing and loss. thank you for the great show at bootleg theater!
